The EICC curriculum is structured around four major competency clusters, each aligned with ICF coaching standards. Across twelve modules, you will build the full range of skills required to practise as a globally competent, emotionally intelligent certified life coach.

Module 1: Introduction to Philosophies/Change Map

A. Setting the Foundation

The programme begins by establishing the ethical and philosophical groundwork of professional coaching. You will learn the ICF Code of Ethics, understand the legal and professional distinctions between coaching, consulting, psychotherapy, and mentoring, and develop your ability to establish clear coaching agreements with clients.

A key distinction taught in this cluster: coaching is a co-creative, equal partnership. Unlike therapy (where the therapist has the answers) or consulting (where the expert solves the problem), the coach stands with the client helping them discover their own answers, navigate their own emotions, and take ownership of their own results.

B. Co-Creating the Relationship

Trust is the foundation of every productive coaching relationship. In this cluster, you will develop the skills to create a safe, supportive coaching environment, learning how to read client personalities (the F1 Fierce, F2 Fun, F3 Friendly, and F4 Factual profiles); apply empathy precisely; build genuine rapport; and establish authentic coaching presence.

You will also explore the VAC Communication Style framework, understanding whether your client processes the world visually, auditorily, or kinaesthetically so you can speak their language and deepen connection from the very first session.

C. Communicating Effectively

Communication is the engine of coaching. This cluster develops three critical capabilities:

Active Listening – progressing from Level I (internal listening) to Level II (focused listening) to Level III (global listening), where you hear not just words but the emotions, tones, and meanings beneath them
Powerful Questioning – mastering the art of short, open, perspective-shifting questions that produce insight and drive action; learning the GROW coaching model question bank for every stage of the coaching conversation
Direct Communication – saying what you see with honesty and respect; using metaphor, reframing, and feedback to help clients confront their blind spots and find their own path forward

D. Facilitating Learning and Results

This is where transformation happens. You will learn to create awareness in clients, guiding them to that “aha” moment where new thoughts, beliefs, and possibilities emerge. You will design targeted actions, set SMART goals collaboratively, and build accountability structures that keep clients moving between sessions.

You will also master the T.F.A. EQ Coaching Model – a Pause Factory framework that guides clients from examining their current Thoughts and Feelings to consciously choosing new Actions. 1. What is the EICC life coach certification?

The Emotional Intelligence Certified Life Coach (EICC) is a professional coaching certification programme offered by Pause Factory that uniquely combines life coaching competencies with emotional intelligence science. 3. How long does the training take?

The EICC programme is structured in three phases:

Pre-Course Assessment - completed before the cohort begins (online)
Pre-Course preparation - online, completed before the core training starts
Core Course - the main training programme, delivered online
Post-Course Mentoring - online mentoring sessions that begin immediately after the core course ends.

The core course ran from April to June (approximately three months), with post-course mentoring beginning from July.

6. What is the difference between life coaching and therapy?

The EICC curriculum includes Module 11: Introduction to Therapy, which specifically addresses the distinction, signalling that Pause Factory considers this boundary important for every trained coach to understand.

Life coaching is forward-focused. As the ICF defines it, coaching is "partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximise their personal and professional potential". Therapy (counselling/psychotherapy) is typically backward-looking and clinically focused. It addresses diagnosed mental health conditions, trauma, and psychological disorders and is practised by licensed mental health professionals.
