No industry, organization, team, or individual is immune to new challenges the\u00a0Covid-19 outbreak\u00a0has brought about.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"standardText\">\n<p>In-person meetings are out-of-the-question for the foreseeable future. Many organizations have hastily transitioned to fully\u00a0remote workforces. Conferences like our annual African Emotional Intelligence Conference (AEIC 2020) are canceled, stores and restaurants closed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"standardText\">\n<h2 style=\"color: #00167a;\">The Emotional State of the Workplace<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"standardText\">\n<p>An employee engagement measurement software firm, recently surveyed 1,000 employees\u00a0and found that more than half (57.7%) report their emotional state as fearful,\u00a0<em>anxious<\/em>\u00a0and\/or stressed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"standardText\">\n<p>Many leaders are facing new difficulties as they adapt. Survey found that \u201ckeeping employees motivated\u201d and \u201cmaintaining employee morale\u201d are among managers\u2019 top challenges in light of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"standardText\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cThe way leaders act right now will either erode their team\u2019s trust to record-lows or build it to new highs,\u201d \u2013 Emplify CEO\u00a0Santiago Jaramillo<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow we lead today is how we will be remembered years from now.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"standardText\">\n<p>While the challenges facing managers are very real, this season of uncertainty also presents leaders with an opportunity to strengthen their teams.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"standardText\">\n<p>What can managers do to motivate employees and maintain morale in this time of anxiety and uncertainty? BE AS COMMUNICATIVE AS POSSIBLE.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"standardText\">\n<p><strong>\u200b<\/strong>Now is not the time to pretend things are \u201cbusiness as usual.\u201d In times of uncertainty, employees need to know you have their backs and are in tune with the realities everyone is facing. Along with weekly team meetings and one-on-one\u2019s, managers should consider implementing a daily cadence of communication to keep a pulse on how people are faring. Prioritizing positive feedback and being intentional about celebrating team \u201cwins\u201d \u2014 big or small \u2014\u00a0can have an outsized impact on morale.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-09864c7\" data-id=\"09864c7\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a70e614 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a70e614\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<div class=\"standardText\">\n<h3 style=\"color: #00167a;\">2. ENCOURAGE EMPLOYEES TO ESTABLISH A ROUTINE THAT WORKS FOR THEM.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"standardText\">\n<p>Survey found that \u201cdisruption to my routine\u201d is the second most challenging issue employees are facing today, right behind \u201cfinancial uncertainty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Be flexible as employees work around new distractions and schedule changes. Avoid canceling or rescheduling calls to maintain stability. Encourage employees to stick to working within work hours to avoid burnout, if they can. Be communicative about taking breaks and time to rest and recharge. Consider asking employees to take 30-60 minutes to do something they love every day (cooking, a favorite type of exercise, playing with pets, going for a walk outside), and then have everyone share with the group either on Whatsapp or Other medium.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-bd9b86d\" data-id=\"bd9b86d\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8043cbe elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8043cbe\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<div class=\"standardText\">\n<h3 style=\"color: #00167a;\">3. CREATE A (VIRTUAL) SAFE SPACE FOR TWO-WAY FEEDBACK.<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"standardText\">\n<p>More than 60% of managers are only \u201cslightly\u201d or \u201cmoderately\u201d confident in their understanding of how employees are handling the coronavirus outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>While anxieties are running high, the well-being of your employees should take precedence over deadlines and results. Managers can use a color system \u2014 green to red \u2014 to gauge how their direct reports are doing professionally and personally. However, some employees may not feel comfortable going into detail about their emotional state. Along with regular check-ins, consider surveying your employees so they can respond to sensitive questions anonymously. Additionally, let employees know that you welcome feedback on how you can improve as well.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"standardText lastItem\">\n<p>Your employees are your organization\u2019s greatest competitive advantage, now more than ever.
