We all drive for execution and result, it is legitimate; the challenge, however, is that we usually do not want to agree that achievement of result in any task requires a combination of competencies; these competencies are a combination of technical and non-technical competencies, and just like people are required to be technically sound in accounting or engineering or teaching, etc. they also need to be emotionally and relationally sound.
We are humans before we became professionals and we would not stop being human; and as humans, we are embodied with electro-chemicals transforming to emotions, our profession did not and cannot erase the emotions in us. Emotions cannot be left at home or at the door when coming into the office, it’s not possible because we embody emotions.
Successful execution cannot be a stand-alone pursuit, research reveals that execution is achieved when blended with intrinsic motivation, embracement of the change in the environment and teamwork in a lot of cases; the latter three are purely relational and emotional, so why do we ignore them and yet expect results?
When we say a staff is doing excellently well on the job, what do we really mean? think about it; if it means the staff is self-motivated, competent in his medical, graphics or architectural skills, can communicate effectively, functions well in a team, understand how to manage people, etc. then you have just said the staff is technical, emotionally and relationally competent. Just like accounting and singing can be learned, emotions and the management of emotions can be learned.
The greatest distractions from result are not technical, they are relational and emotional. About 85% of what we do at work is purely relational and emotional, only about 15% are technical. This means without emotional and relational competencies, we constantly sustain up to 85% chance of not achieving our holistic goals. Your EQ is directly proportional to your OUTCOMES.
